Article - Tips for Entrepreneurs

Being an entrepreneur means it is all on you, the "it" being everything from customer service to managing finances, to networking to landing the deal.  It is no surprise that sometimes important tasks may go "un-tasked," trying to manage so many responsibilities.

Yet, staying on top of everything is a must for entrepreneurs.  Which is why the article, "Tips for Entrepreneurs," is a must read for advice on how to stay on track, with topics on reaching out to your network, giving back, never stop being a student, and customer experience management.  The article also provides helpful links on each topic.

"As an entrepreneur every now and then it is important to take a step back and really take a look at the big picture and dive back in with refreshed energy. Here are a few points to revisit and reevaluate after you get up and running."

Article - Why It’s Vital to Pay Yourself First in Business

“Why It’s Vital to Pay Yourself First in Business,” posted on Entrepreneur.com by author Sam Harrop, is a great article that gives entrepreneurs an idea and a good visual on how to pay yourself first, as well as why it’s important.  Many new business owners find it difficult to separate their money from the business’ money, and oftentimes there is no clear line or a standard established when the business is started.

Highlights of the article:
  • It’s important to figure your basic living expenses
  • Have multiple budgets for the different stages your business goes through
  • Get insurance

TheDataFyles feels that a good starting point is your budget, and knowing how much you are spending monthly for your living expenses.  This will help to determine how much your business needs to make in order for you to cover your basics, how much you need to break even, and how much to make a profit.

The best way to determine this information is tracking your expenses, and separating business expenses from personal expenses.  A simple Excel Spreadsheet is a quick and free way to track.

Article - 5 Sacrifices Every Entrepreneur Must Make

Being an entrepreneur, regardless of what type of business you decide to endeavor, is a challenge.  Rewarding, yes.  Easy, no.  As entrepreneurs, it is more than fulfilling, more than exciting, to see your dreams come to fruition.  Getting your tax ID, your DBA, your website, etc.  But after you have everything set and in place, it's time to make money, get clients, and generate revenue.

When this does not happen overnight, it can be devastating, but giving up is not an option for most.  In this article, "5 Sacrifices Every Entrepreneur Must Make," by Jayson DeMers, posted on Entrepreneur.com, the author discusses five sacrifices that I feel are very important to keep in mind on your entrepreneurial journey.

"Every entrepreneur starts out with big dreams and excitement.  As an entrepreneur, you control your own destiny, and with the right ideas, the right skillset and unflinching dedication, you can build wealth or establish an enterprise to serve as your legacy" (DeMers).

1. Stability
2. Work/life split
3. Income
4. Sleep
5. Comfort

Article - Eight Common Mistakes First-Time Entrepreneurs Should Ditch in 2017

Author Christina Nicholson has combined the advice and expertise of several successful entrepreneurs and business professionals in the article, “Eight Common Mistakes First-Time Entrepreneurs Should Ditch in 2017," found on Fast Company's website.

If you have big plans for your business in 2017, and I’m hoping that you do, this is a great article to help you steer clear of some of the traps entrepreneurs fall into when they first start off on their entrepreneurial endeavors.

The author lists eight very important opportunities for entrepreneurs, and of the eight listed, the mistakes that stood out, from my experience, are trying to network inauthentically, a fear of spending money on your brand, and failing to self-promote and make the sale.

Networking is crucial, but not knowing how to network can be devastating.  If you struggle in this area, take some time to work on this skill.  Practice, do research, and find a “networking buddy” to get feedback, as well as someone to attend events with you.

Face it, the money that you are spending is coming out of your own pocket, in most cases, which may cause many entrepreneurs to cut corners.  But as the article states, “don’t cut corners where it really counts.”

Your business is your vision, and you need to be able to convey your service and/or product with confidence.  As the article states, “self-promotion is a necessary evil.”

I found this article very beneficial!  Be sure to check out the article for more information, and most importantly, be sure the eight mistakes listed are not yours in 2017.
